» 70% of companies on the way to ESOS compliance
Wednesday, 3 February 2016
Friday 29th January marked the final deadline for
organisations to notify the Environment Agency of compliance with their Energy
Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), and the EA have now released their data as of
that day.
The latest figures shows that the EA has to date received
5,948 notifications of compliance and 1,000 notifications of intent. This means
that 70 per cent of qualifying companies are at least on the road to
compliance.
A ‘notification of intent’ means that the company is aware
that their submission is late but intends to comply. Such businesses must detail
why they are unable to comply, what steps they have taken so far and a
realistic date for achieving compliance.
The ESOS scheme was developed to help the UK government
comply with the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive, which demands that its member
states force large businesses to have routine energy audits conducted.
Under ESOS, it’s compulsory for British companies employing
250 or more staff and/or with an annual turnover above £39 million or a balance
sheet above £34 million to be audited for energy efficiency.

wide range of industries to meet their efficiency targets. Along with supplying
