Whatever process it’s being used for, an electric motor failure,
like any equipment malfunction, is at best an inconvenience and at worst a
serious problem with significant financial repercussions. When time is of the
essence, it’s important to make the right decision - so what are your choices
when an electric motor fails?
Rewind the failed
motor
In the case of larger motors, the general rule to follow is
the greater the frame size, the cheaper it is to have it rewound rather than
replace it. For example, a motor with a 450 frame size can be as much as 40%
cheaper to rewind than replace.
In an urgent situation, specialist or bespoke motors should
always be rewound as there may be a considerable lead time for these to be
manufactured and delivered.
Gibbons have provided electric motor rewinds
since the company was formed over 45 years ago. We offer a 24-hour emergency
call-out service and can collect and deliver within a 50-mile radius of our
Essex workshop.
Replace it
Small electric
motors have low manufacturing costs, so for this reason it’s usually
cheaper to replace them in the event of a breakdown.
If there’s evidence of catastrophic failure, then a complete
overhaul may be required to return the motor to its original efficiency. Time
and cost mean a replacement is usually the wisest choice.
If the motor has failed due to being unsuitable for the
application it’s powering, a rewind will not solve the problem. If you think
this may be the case, speak to your supplier who can help specify the right
motor for the job.
