Welcome to the second in our series of blogs explaining some of the expressions you may come across when dealing with variable-speed drives, pumps, electric motors, control panels and more. Today we’re asking ‘what is an induction motor?’

It's actually quite simple:

  • An induction motor is an alternating current (AC) motor in which the stator winding is directly connected to the power source.
  • The rotor doesn't have a direct electrical connection as its current is induced (i.e. caused by) by the electro-magnetic field from the stator.
  • Hence the term induction motor!

We hope this has cleared things up. If you have any technical questions for the friendly Gibbons team, don’t hesitate to call us on 01621 868138 or email info@gibbonsgroup.co.uk.
