Small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) could achieve return
on investment within just one and a half years when implementing
energy-efficiency measure, according to a recent study from financial solutions
provider DLL.
The research was quoted in an Electrical Review article (‘Should ESOS be viewed as more than red
tape but the prompt to a green future?’ - June 2016) that explained the need
for businesses to see programmes such as the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme
(ESOS) as pathways to saving money and a more efficient future rather than
mandatory legislation.
The article highlights the fact that potential energy
savings of up to 25 per cent can be put to use in other operational areas
within SMEs, while savings will be magnified for larger businesses with
multiple premises.
With fuel prices in the UK set to rise by 2020 according to
government forecasts, SMEs are encouraged to get ahead of the game by
implementing energy-efficiency measures now. The first place to target is
commonly electric motor-driven
processes such as conveyors, mixers, pumps, fans and compressors, as these
account for around 60 per cent of the UK’s industrial energy consumption.
As well as upgrading electric motors and the driven
equipment to the most energy-efficient models, users can add variable-speed
drives (VSDs) to their process. These devices allow electric motor speed to
be accurately controlled, meaning only the amount of energy required by the
process at any given time is consumed. VSDs are perfect for applications such
as conveyor systems within food and beverage production where different running
speeds are required during various phases of the process.
