A recent
blog from ABB’s Energy Efficiency Manager John Guthrie highlights that once
an ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) energy audit has been carried out,
companies are under no obligation to implement the energy-saving opportunities
identified.
ESOS is an initiative launched by the UK government in order
to comply with the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive, which requires its member
states to instigate energy audits for large businesses.
ESOS means that organisations employing at least 250 people
or those with an annual turnover of more than £42.5 million are legally
required to have their energy-management systems audited. The purpose of these
audits is to establish areas where energy-efficiency improvements can be made.
Taking no further action after an ESOS audit seems like a
wasted opportunity to us. Having made the effort to be audited, the next
logical step is to put energy-efficiency measures in place and begin to realise
the significant savings available.
