In 2014,
London Mayor Boris Johnson launched the Business Energy Challenge, a new
initiative which aims to encourage companies in the capital to reduce their
energy consumption. The scheme was so successful that it has recently returned for
a second year with even more award categories.
The
challenge is open to businesses of all sizes and offers awards to those showcasing
their commitment to energy reduction, with prizes available for ‘climber of the
year’, ‘team climb’ and ‘large portfolio climber of the challenge’ among
others.
Last year’s
Business Energy Challenge saw the 27 award winners – including organisations
such as BT, McDonald’s and Royal Bank of Scotland – reduce their carbon
emissions by over 80,000 tonnes in 2013/14 compared to 2010/11. That equates to
£12.5 million in energy costs, enough to power more than 10,700 UK households
for a year.
