An article in H&V
News (‘A lesson in cognitive care’ – 23rd March 2016) has once
again raised the issue of how improving indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools can
enhance pupils’ learning experience, not to mention their health.
The link between IAQ and the ability to concentrate and
learn is becoming increasingly evident, as research continues to be carries out
and the subject gains recognition.
Many school buildings were designed to be as energy
efficient as possible in order to reduce heating costs, but this has been
achieved at the cost of adequate ventilation. A large number of schools are
very well insulated but do not allow enough ventilation which leads to an
increased level of pollutants such as CO2.
Links between CO2 levels and cognitive function make it
clear that students’ health and grades are suffering due to poor IAQ in schools
and that high-performance air handling systems are essential for such
buildings. This is especially true of schools situated next to busy roads where
opening windows to allow ‘fresh’ air to circulate only introduces more
pollutants.
Gibbons HVAC Services supplies air handling products and
services to a vast range of buildings, including schools, colleges and
universities. Our energy-efficient range of HVAC equipment is backed up by
maintenance, repair and technical support from our expert team.
