Electric motors account for around 70% of industrial energy use, meaning there is the potential for significant energy savings to be made. Here are five ways electric motor users can reduce energy consumption.

Motor management plan

As part of an overall energy-management strategy, to achieve long-term energy savings and handle motor failures in the quickest and most cost-effective way possible.

Routine maintenance programme

By carrying out preventative maintenance such as laser shaft alignment, lubrication and cleaning, you’ll go a long way to ensuring the most efficient performance possible from your motor.

Energy-efficient motors

Replacing old, inefficient motors with modern high-performance models will significantly reduce energy losses via improved design, higher-quality materials and stricter tolerances.

Variable-speed drives (VSDs)

VSDs allow you to optimise electric motor-driven applications by precisely matching speed to load requirements, allowing energy savings of up to 60% to be realised.

Opt for a rewind

If a motor has failed, it may be more economical to rewind it rather than purchase a replacement. This is usually dependent on motor size and type, as larger equipment and bespoke designs may be very expensive to replace. For certain motors, a successful rewind performed by an experienced provider can lead to little or no efficiency losses, which in the long term should be more cost-effective than buying a new motor.
