A variable-speed drive (VSD), also known as a variable-frequency drive, is an electronic device which controls the speed of an electric motor. It does this by varying motor input frequency and voltage which is specified by the operator via a control panel keypad.
VSDs are a vital component for controlling a wide range of motor-driven machinery including fans, pumps and conveyors. A great number of industries rely on VSDs, including power plants, water-treatment works, machine shops and textile factories.

Initially, the appeal of a variable-speed drive was its ability to maximise productivity by controlling the acceleration, flow, pressure, speed and temperature of an application. In recent years, however, end users have begun facing increasing pressure to meet carbon reduction commitments, so energy efficiency has become the priority.
With electric motors accounting for as much as two thirds of industrial electricity demand, selecting the incorrect motor size for a project can lead to significant energy wastage.
