On industrial sites such as waste treatment plants, quarries
and foundries, dust control presents a major challenge. Meeting stringent
environmental and health and safety legislation can be expensive,
time-consuming and stressful for site managers. Thankfully there are various
solutions available, although some are more efficient than others. Here are 5
ways you can control dust in your business:
Extraction fans
Dust extractors employ suction to remove particles – the
process is a heavy energy user and is therefore considered an expensive and
ineffective solution.
Baghouses
A baghouse uses long, cylindrical bags or tubes through
which air passes and is filtered. Although very effective, baghouses tend to be
large and require regular maintenance and cleaning.
Wet scrubbers
These devices introduce water into a dust-carrying system in
order to suppress it before releasing the clean air. Wet scrubbers can handle
high temperatures and are smaller than other dust control devices. However, the
resulting sludge must be disposed of correctly, which can be a costly and
onerous process.
Electrostatic
precipitation
An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) uses an induced
electrostatic charge to stop the flow of airborne dust. Moving through a
chimney, dust particles pick up a charge as they pass a charged metal grid.
These particles are then attracted to oppositely-charged collecting plates
where they form a layer. The plates are shaken periodically and the dust
collected below. ESPs are very efficient but are also expensive to install and
impractical for sites with limited space.
Gibbons’ mobile
atomiser
An economical, effective dust control solution is the Gibbons mobile atomiser.
This portable unit distributes a fine mist over a large area to quickly and
effectively suppress dust. The mobile atomiser can handle any terrain and also has
its own water and power supply, so it’s ideal for sites without mains services.
The unit uses opposing meshes to slice water into tiny droplets, so it never
blocks and therefore does not require filters.
The mobile
atomiser can be hired for those seeking a short-term dust control solution,
or it can be bought outright, so call Matthew Gibbons on 01621 868138 or email matthew.gibbons@gibbonsgroup.co.uk
