This is the latest in our series of blogs explaining some of the terminology used in our industry. Today’s question is: what is a busbar?

A busbar (sometimes written as ‘bus bar’) is a strip of copper, brass or aluminium within a control panel. Its function is not structural, though - it is used to conduct electricity. Busbars are capable of carrying a very high current and are usually used to make a common connection between several circuits in a control panel.

The ‘bus’ part of the term is derived from a contraction of the Latin ‘omnibus’, meaning ‘for all’.
