» The dying art of electric motor rewinds
Monday, 3 March 2014
We examine why electric motor rewinds services have become
less common and how opting for a rewind rather than replacement could result in
huge savings and reduced downtime.
Gibbons Engineering Group has offered an electric motor
rewinds service since its inception in 1969. At that time, the price of a new
motor meant that a rewind was the only option for many businesses. Since then,
reduced manufacturing costs have seen motors become cheaper and rendered
rewinds less necessary. Mass production has made repairing any device – from
televisions to toasters – a dying art, and electric motors are no exception.
Gibbons is proud to be among the remaining companies
providing motor rewinds and repairs – our highly-skilled engineers are fully
trained and we can offer a complete service, including:
Even if you’re confident carrying out mechanicals repairs, a
motor rewind really is a job for the professionals. Once a coil has been
removed, it’s impossible to replace it in its original state so a rewind should
only be undertaken by a skilled, experienced professional.
For larger motors, a rewind can be as much as 40% cheaper
than replacement, even with emergency call-out charges taken into account.
Plus, the delivery time on specialist motors can be several months, whereas
Gibbons can have yours rewound and back in service in a fraction of the time.

Wow, I didn't realize that repairing an electric motor was usually a better deal than buying a new one. Good to know because I work with a lot of older electric motors. Thanks for the information, my boss will be thrilled to hear this.
