In order to maximise the efficiency and operating life of an electric motor, planned routine maintenance is essential. Bearings are, of course, a fundamental motor component and if greasing is neglected they can deteriorate, causing issues such as overheating and misalignment. But how often should electric motor bearings be lubricated?

Peter Wilson of CovElec says that regular motor maintenance should include checking and re-lubrication of bearings at intervals of around 2,000 hours – normally equating to once every three months. Remember, though, that the frequency of re-greasing may differ depending on how demanding the motor’s operating environment is. Consult your motor’s rating plate or contact your supplier to ensure your motor is being adequately lubricated.
