10 Facts About Electric Motors....

This week we're bringing you the second in our 'Did You Know?' series and taking a look into the world of electric motors


1. Scottish monk Andrew Gordon is often credited with creating the first electric motors – simple electrostatic devices made in the 1740s.

2. The first electric motor capable of turning machinery was invented by the British scientist William Sturgeon in 1832.

3. Just under 10 billion electric motors are manufactured each year. This is expected to grow to 12 billion by 2018.

4. Electric motors account for 45% of global electricity use and 69% of all electricity used by industry.


5. In 2009 inventor James Dyson unveiled a handheld vacuum cleaner which he claimed was run by the “fastest motor in the world,” turning at 104,000 rpm.

6. The world electric motor market is currently worth £70 billion. This is predicted to rise to £73.5 billion by 2017.

7. The world’s smallest electric motor was announced in 2011, measuring one nanometre (a billionth of a metre or 1/60,000 the width of a human hair) across and consisting of a single molecule.

8. The world’s largest supplier of industrial electric motors is ABB, which reported total global revenue of £25 billion in 2012.

9. Cars are a major source of demand for electric motors, with the average vehicle containing more than 30.
