There are less than two weeks until new ATEX legislation for
equipment and systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres comes into
effect.
The new ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU is to be applied from
April 20th 2016 and means manufacturers must declare the conformity
of equipment placed on the market from that date. The new legislation is
intended to help improve market transparency while protecting equipment users.
ATEX takes its name from the French title of the original 94/9/EC
directive Appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères EXplosives. The directive grades equipment and systems
to be used in potentially explosive atmospheres, such as areas where gas,
vapours or dust are present – for example petrochemical plants, flour mills and
mines.
Electric motor users who intend to use their equipment in
a potentially-explosive atmosphere should ensure that from April 20th
their supplier is in compliance with the new directive and that their equipment
carries a declaration of conformity.
