Improving the quality of indoor air in shared spaces can
lead to results of occupants’ cognitive function tests increasing by over 100
per cent, according to a recent study.
The report, jointly conducted by the Harvard University TH
Chan School of Public Health’s Center for Health and the Global Environment,
SUNY Upstate Medical University and Syracuse University, found that employees’
cognitive performance scores were on average 101 per cent higher in spaces with
enhanced ventilation than in conventional buildings.
Cognitive abilities play a crucial role in maintaining and
increasing productivity, learning, decision making and safety, which underlines
the importance of reducing airborne contaminants in workplaces, healthcare
facilities and educational centres to name just a few.
Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems
within occupied spaces can be a breeding ground for mould, bacteria and
viruses. These contaminants reach building occupants via the airflow and
jeopardise their health and wellbeing which can have a negative impact on
productivity while increasing sickness-related absences.
Facilities managers can take steps to protect building users
by installing an ultraviolet germicidal eradiation (UVGI) system within the air
handling system. UVGI systems apply the disinfecting power of ultraviolet C
(UVC) light to the internal air handling unit surfaces – such as cooling coils
and ductwork – which removes contaminants without the need for manual cleaning.
Not only does this provide safer, healthier air
to building occupants, it helps maximise HVAC performance and reduce energy
consumption.
