British companies are rolling out energy-efficiency schemes
at the fastest rate ever, according to a study carried out by Bloomberg New
Energy Finance (BNEF) and the Energy Efficiency Verification Specialists) EEVS.
The report, which surveyed 67 UK energy managers and other
senior figures, found that more than 80 per cent of respondents had approved
new efficiency programmes in the third quarter of 2015 – the highest recorded
figures since the survey was launched in 2012.
Lighting and boiler controls were the most common
installations in Q3 2015, with both up on the four-quarter average. However,
the proportion of those authorising electric motor and variable-speed
drive installations stood at just 10 per cent - almost half the 4Q average.
The lack of motor and drive installations is surprising when
you consider that motors account for around two thirds of industrial
electricity demand and that combining them with VSDs can reduce energy
consumption by as much as 60 per cent.
In many applications, the cost of ordering and installing a
variable-speed drive can be offset by energy savings within 12 months, while
energy managers should already be considering upgrading their electric motors
in order to comply with the next phase of the EU MEPS efficiency legislation.
This takes effect in January 2017 and states that motors with an output of 0.75
– 375 kW must be rated at IE3 efficiency or IE2 if combined with a
variable-speed drive.
