Tomorrow (Friday 29th January) marks the deadline
for qualifying companies to notify the Environment Agency of compliance with
the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS). In November, the original ESOS deadline
- set for 5th December - was extended after
so few firms had confirmed compliance.
It seems that the reprieve has spurred businesses into
action, as H&V News (27th
January 2016) reports that the EA has now received 4,000 notifications and
expects another 2,500 before the deadline. However, these 6,500 companies
represent just half of the total number qualifying under the scheme, with the
remaining firms facing a fine of up to £50,000.
The ESOS regulations were introduced to meet the
requirements of the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive, which demands that its
member states implement a programme of routine energy audits for large organisations.
ESOS makes it mandatory for UK-based businesses that employ 250 or more staff
and/or have an annual turnover above £39 million or a balance sheet in excess
of £34 million to be audited for energy efficiency.
If your business isn’t eligible for an ESOS audit, you
needn’t worry about the deadline but you may nevertheless want to consider an
energy analysis. An assessment of your electric motor-powered
equipment such as pumps, conveyors and mixers along with HVAC and humidification systems
could make you aware of potential savings within your business that you’d never
previously considered.
Here at Gibbons we have considerable experience of products
and services that significantly improve energy efficiency within offices,
factories, healthcare facilities and data centres to name just a few.
