Most members of the public in the UK would urge young people
to become engineers over three other common career paths, according to a recent
survey.
The poll, conducted by the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers (IMechE), asked a cross-section of 1,000 members of the public to
state which of four jobs – engineer, doctor, accountant or banker – they would
encourage young people to undertake. Engineering was the most popular choice,
chosen by 86 per cent of respondents, while just 36 per cent said they would
advise a young person to become a banker.
Peter Finegold, head of education and skills at IMechE, was
pleased with the outcome, saying: “We face a shortfall of 30,000 qualified
engineers every year coming through our education system. This result suggests
however that basic demand is there and that the public already has some
understanding of the extraordinarily diverse and valuable careers available in
engineering.”
The variety and challenges presented by engineering make it
a hugely rewarding and enjoyable profession, which is why the IMechE survey
results came as no surprise to us.
