Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have
revealed that productivity in the UK rose at its fastest rate for four years
during the second quarter of 2015.
From April to June this year, output per hour rose 0.9%, the
highest quarter-on-quarter increase since 2011. Output per hour is the amount a
company produces after costs, so is a reliable indicator of efficiency and
productivity.
There are many factors that affect productivity in process
industries, such as staffing levels and training, but the efficiency of
equipment is arguably the most important. Electric motor-driven
applications – pumps, fans, conveyors and mixers, for example – are responsible
for around 65% of industrial electricity consumption, so it’s the first place
to look at for enhancing productivity.
By pairing an electric motor with a variable-speed
drive, users can maximise the efficiency of the process and reduce energy
consumption by as much as 60%. For example, by matching a pump’s speed to the
load and running it at 80% instead of full speed can actually halve energy
consumption.
Gibbons Engineering Group is a founder member of the
Authorized Value Provider scheme, meaning we’re specially approved to supply,
install and offer associated services for ABB drives.
