Automation giant ABB has added to its range of low-voltage IEC mining electric motors, with a model featuring Ex d flameproof protection for use in underground mines (group I) now available to suit applications including conveyors, fans and pumps.

These cast-iron motors are rated from 0.55 to 710 kW and are available in frame sizes IEC 80 to 450 and from two to eight-pole pairs. They offer an extension to ABB’s long-life explosive atmosphere range, which has been used for many years in demanding group II and III surface industries such as oil & gas and marine.

The specialist M3JP motors are certified to IECEx and ATEX and operate up to efficiency level IE4 in accordance with IEC legislation. An IP66 (dust tight) enclosure is provided to protect against the ingress of powerful water jets and volatile substances. Insulation class F comes as standard, protecting the motor at temperatures up to 155°C, with H-class insulation (180°C) available as an option.
