There are plenty of positive signs that the economy’s
improving – unemployment is falling, prices at the pumps are at their
lowest for four years and construction is booming once more. However, there’s
still uncertainty over energy prices which means building owners and end users
should look towards energy-efficient equipment in order to keep their long-term
costs down.
By
upgrading and refurbishing equipment such as electric motors, pumps and HVAC (heating, ventilation and
air-conditioning) systems, building owners can take control of energy
efficiency and help lessen the impact of the volatile energy market.
There’s
another very important reason for doing this. By 1 April 2018, the Department
of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) intends to make it illegal for commercial
landlords to let properties which do not achieve an E rating on their Energy
Performance Certificate (EPC). Experts predict that 18% of buildings will not
reach this target, so there are a great deal of owners who have just over three
years to increase the energy efficiency of their building or face paying a
substantial financial penalty. Fines are likely to be calculated as a
percentage of the building’s rateable value.
