The 2014 FIFA World Cup is well under way and excitement is growing for millions of football fans around the globe, but how many of us consider the environmental impact of the tournament?
A recent FIFA survey reveals that the 2014 World Cup will see 2.72 million tonnes of CO2 released into the atmosphere – that’s enough to fuel every vehicle in America for a day. The draw for the competition, held back in December, is estimated to have produced 5,221 tonnes of carbon dioxide alone.
The majority of the overall figure of 2.72 million tonnes is made up of the impact of teams, officials and fans flying to, from and around Brazil. Along with the estimated 3 million Brazilians attending games, around 600,000 international travellers will head to the 12 host cities before the competition ends on 13th July.
But even if you aren’t travelling to South America and are watching from the sofa at home, remember that the electricity surge from television viewers around the world also contributes to the tournament’s overall carbon emissions. For example, England’s 2002 quarter-final match against Brazil caused a 2,570 megawatt surge of demand on the UK National Grid as the nation tuned in.
It doesn’t end there, as the World Cup also results in electricity being drained by stadiums, fan festivals, banquets, concession stands, training sites and team hotels.
These are startling facts, but have they made you think about the impact of your company’s energy consumption?
We know that for many companies, reducing carbon footprint and lowering energy use are vital concerns but they struggle to find the time to implement everything. That’s where Gibbons comes in with our Green Efficiency initiative, which provides tailored engineering solutions that are energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions.
