» 3 signs your electric motor is about to fail
Monday, 24 February 2014
Here are a few symptoms of electric motor failure to look
out for so you can take action and avoid costly unplanned downtime.
Because the majority of an electric motor’s components are
housed internally, faults aren’t always obvious until they become serious.
However, there are a few tell-tale signs you should be aware of so you can spot
issues before your motor fails and take action.
Noise
If the motor makes grinding or scraping noises then it’s
likely that there’s bearing damage caused by poor shaft alignment.
Vibration
Excessive vibration hints at damage to the windings and
bearings due to the gradual wear it causes as components rub together. It may
also be due to loose mounting bolts.
Overheating
If during operation you can feel your motor giving off
excessive heat or it begins to expel smoke then there may be a loose or burnt
connection. Visual evidence of overheating includes discoloured paint and
external damage such as loose motor mountings.
If you should notice any of the above then you should take
action before a repairable problem leads to failure and unplanned downtime.
