Energy-saving opportunities implemented following an ESOS
audit could see qualifying companies achieve savings of up to £360,000,
according to recent analysis of the scheme.
The study, performed by the Carbon Trust, looked at 86 full
ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) assessments and found the average
amount spent on energy by organisations to be £1.8 million. With an average
potential cost reduction via energy-saving measures estimated at 20 per cent,
the Trust believes that eligible businesses could save an average of £360,000.
The average cost saving of 20 per cent is significantly
higher than initially estimated by the Department of Energy and Climate Change
(DECC), which in 2013 forecast five per cent reductions as a result of
implementing energy-efficiency changes.
The report states that manufacturers identified potential
savings of 23 per cent, which could be achieved by maximising the efficiency of
electric motor-powered processes. In addition to upgrading motors,
manufacturers are able to optimise their application by installing
variable-speed drives. These devices allow motor speed to be precisely
controlled, giving users the power to minimise energy consumption while increasing
productivity.
