The efficiency of some industrial gearboxes may not be as good as manufacturers claim, according to a study from the University of Ghent. Researchers from the Belgian university conducted a series of tests on transmission systems from six unnamed manufacturers and found that measured efficiencies were up to 25 per cent worse than claimed in the catalogue.

The study included a variety of gearboxes including right-angled worm, helical-bevel, helical-worm and helical-spiroid. Power ratings ranged from 0.34-5.58kW, torque ratings from 167-505Nm and ratios from 11.41-87.65.

The researchers claimed that gearbox efficiency is not standardised and that manufacturers do not normally provide consumers with information about the conditions under which their gearboxes are tested. This makes comparisons difficult for users looking to place an order.

Here at Gibbons, we only supply products that we have complete confidence in, which is why we’re delighted to be an approved provider of Bonfiglioli transmission systems. We’ve teamed up with APT Powerdrive, who are the sole UK agent for Bonfiglioli machines, to exclusively supply the CM, CO, IP and SS postcodes in Essex and Suffolk.

One of the reasons we are proud to be a Bonfiglioli gearbox supplier is their Commitment to Excellence, which includes a focus on providing the highest possible level of quality in each product. This is achieved in part by ISO 9001 quality management system certification (also held by Gibbons), a globally-recognised credential that demonstrates an ability to deliver a consistently high standard of products and services.
