» English universities to save £210 million with energy-efficiency scheme
Monday, 15 February 2016
Universities across England are expected to make
energy-efficiency savings worth £210 million thanks to the Revolving Green Fund
(RGF), a scheme that provides repayable grants to higher education institutions
(HEIs), according to Energy Live News.
Since launching in 2008, the RGF has provided over £90 million
of recoverable grants to HEIs in order to help them significantly reduce their
energy consumption and save money while lowering annual carbon emissions by
around 82,000 tonnes.
Salix, a government-funded organisation that provided
investment for the programme, claims that 2,600 projects have helped
universities save over £50 million in energy costs to date.
University buildings such as lecture theatres, laboratories
and accommodation blocks are heavily reliant on HVAC (heating,
ventilation and air-conditioning) systems for the comfort of students and
staff, and therefore have great potential for the implementation of
energy-efficiency improvements.
Schemes such as the RGF allow HEIs to upgrade their HVAC
equipment to more energy-efficient systems, including the addition of variable-speed
drives (VSDs). VSDs enable precision control of HVAC systems, meaning
energy wastage is all but eliminated while building occupants can study and
live in more comfortable surroundings.
VSDs can reduce energy consumption in electric motor-driven
processes by as much as 60 per cent, with a return on investment possible
within 12 months in many cases.
