Glastonbury Festival is one of the world’s largest open-air
events for music and performing arts, with its popularity increasing massively
over the last 45 years. Since the first staging in 1970, when Worthy Farm in
Somerset hosted just 1,500 revellers, the festival’s capacity has grown to
177,000 – greater than the population of Oxford.
Hosting such a massive event involves a great deal of
preparation and management, including supplying the city-sized site with the 11
million litres of water to be used for drinking and washing during the five-day
festival.
Until recently, the mains water supply from nearby Pilton
struggled to meet the enormous demand from the festival site, so two
purpose-built underground reservoirs were built. A series of industrial pumps help
bring the water to the surface via a pipeline distribution network, serving 700
hand basins and 100 standpipes.
A state-of-the-art ABB water measurement system helps
organisers to accurately monitor reservoir levels, flow rates and consumption
across the entire site. This system allows usage to be analysed for accurate
billing and an early warning of potential supply issues.
