Here we answer a handful of frequently asked questions about the new EU MEPS (European Minimum Energy Performance Standard) electric motor legislation which comes into force on 1 January 2015.

How do the new IE efficiency standards compare with old EFF ratings?

EFF ratings are now obsolete and have been replaced by IE grades. Here’s how they translate:

Old rating                                            New rating
EFF3 (low efficiency)                                   -
EFF2 (standard efficiency)                      IE1 (standard efficiency)
EFF1 (high efficiency)                            IE2 (high efficiency)
-                                                 IE3 (premium efficiency)
-                                                 IE4 (super premium efficiency)

Are marine motors included in EU MEPS?

The EU MEPS scheme does not include all motors covered by international standard IEC 60034-30, and marine motors are excluded from EU MEPS because they’re designed for ambient temperatures above 40°C.

What information do I need to be certain of compliance?

Ask your electric motor supplier to issue a test report which will confirm the testing method used and that the item meets the new standards. Compliant electric motors should also carry the following information on their nameplate:

  •          Lowest nominal efficiency at 100%, 75% and 50% rated load
  •          Efficiency level
  •          Year of manufacture.

Can non-compliant motors be repaired and reinstated?

Yes, as the new standard only relates to electric motors placed on the market and not existing machines. Gibbons offer electric motor rewinds and repairs from our workshop in Essex.

Should I choose an IE2 motor to save money?

The initial cost of an IE2 motor may be lower than that of an IE3 or IE4 machine, but it will need to be paired with a variable-speed drive if rated from 7.5 – 375 kW. Plus, over the long term, IE3 and IE4 motors offer faster payback periods due to greater energy savings. By opting for a high-efficiency motor you’ll also be covered for legislation changes for the foreseeable future.
