Welcome to the second in our series of blogs explaining some of the expressions you may come across when dealing with variable-speed drives, pumps, electric motors, control panels and more. Today we’re asking ‘what is an induction motor?’



It's actually quite simple:

  • An induction motor is an alternating current (AC) motor in which the stator winding is directly connected to the power source.
  • The rotor doesn't have a direct electrical connection as its current is induced (i.e. caused by) by the electro-magnetic field from the stator.
  • Hence the term induction motor!
